Steven Bergwijn Responds to Ronald Koeman’s Criticism

Steven Bergwijn has recently voiced his displeasure with Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman after the latter criticized the winger’s decision to move to Saudi Arabia. Koeman mentioned that he believed Bergwijn’s move to Al Ittihad signaled the end of his national team career and questioned the player’s motives, suggesting that financial gain took precedence over his sporting aspirations. In response, Bergwijn expressed his disappointment and stated that he no longer had any desire to play under Koeman’s management.

During an interview with De Telegraaf, Bergwijn emphasized that he felt let down by Koeman’s public comments and lack of direct communication. He mentioned that he had always viewed representing the Netherlands as an honor but now felt reluctant to do so under the current national coach. Bergwijn highlighted the fact that he values the support of his teammates and is open to playing for the national team again under a different coach in the future.

Bergwijn’s transfer from Ajax to Al Ittihad on Sept. 2 generated mixed reactions, particularly from Koeman, who questioned the player’s decision at the age of 26. The deal, valued at €21 million ($23.3m), involved Bergwijn joining a team that includes notable players like N’Golo Kanté and Karim Benzema. Despite the potential for success in Saudi Arabia, Koeman expressed his belief that sporting ambition should take precedence over financial considerations.

Interestingly, journalists pointed out that Koeman had previously included Georginio Wijnaldum, who plays in the Saudi Pro League, in the Dutch squad for the Euros. In response, Koeman attempted to differentiate between Wijnaldum’s situation and Bergwijn’s decision, citing varying circumstances. However, Bergwijn contested Koeman’s remarks, highlighting the importance of direct communication and understanding before making assumptions about a player’s choices.

The exchange between Steven Bergwijn and Ronald Koeman sheds light on the complexities of player-coach relationships and the importance of mutual respect and communication. While Koeman expressed his disappointment with Bergwijn’s move to Al Ittihad, the winger’s response underscored his commitment to making decisions that align with his personal and professional goals. Moving forward, it remains to be seen whether the two will reconcile their differences or if Bergwijn will indeed seek opportunities under a different national coach in the future.
