The Phoenix Suns organization is currently entangled in a legal battle with one of its former employees, Andrea Trischan, who served as the program manager of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Trischan has lodged complaints of racial discrimination, harassment, and retaliation against the organization and is seeking a whopping $60 million in damages. This dispute stems from Trischan’s tenure at the Suns, which started in September 2022, amidst upheaval caused by the suspension of then-owner Robert Sarver for his conduct and the team’s workplace culture.
According to Trischan’s attorney, Sheree Wright, Andrea Trischan faced blatant racist remarks and operated in a hostile work environment, which she reported to the HR department and top executives of the organization. Trischan’s primary duties were to address prevailing issues in the organization that were exacerbated under Sarver’s ownership, specifically focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. However, things took a turn when Trischan noticed the formation of a diversity council within the team that did not involve her, raising eyebrows about the sincerity of the organization’s efforts in promoting diversity.
Although Trischan claims she faced harassment, discrimination, and retaliation from colleagues and superiors for her attempts to address the discriminatory behavior within the organization, the Suns’ response painted a different picture. Stacey Mitch, the Senior Vice President of Communications for the Suns, dismissed Trischan’s allegations as baseless and accused her of filing a false charge with the state agency. The organization emphasized its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace and countered Trischan’s claims, stating that her job description did not include investigatory responsibilities.
Following Trischan’s termination in July 2023, the conflict between her and the Suns has escalated, with discussions about mediation and the looming threat of a formal lawsuit against the organization. Trischan’s attorneys are preparing for legal action against the Suns, given the lack of progress in reaching a settlement through mediation. The Suns, on the other hand, stand firm in their belief that Trischan’s claims are baseless and anticipate a favorable outcome once the Arizona Civil Rights Division completes its review of the matter.
Since Trischan’s departure, the Suns organization has undergone significant changes, including the resignation of key executives mentioned in ESPN’s investigation from 2022. The only executive who did not remain with the team was Jason Rowley, who stepped down before the introduction of the new majority owner, Mat Ishbia. Ishbia’s acquisition of the Suns and Mercury from Robert Sarver marked a significant transition for the organization, signaling a shift from the controversies of the past towards a new era under fresh leadership.
