The Rise of Green Bay Packers’ New Kicker: Brayden Narveson

When rookie kicker Brayden Narveson first arrived at the Green Bay Packers headquarters, head coach Matt LaFleur expressed his worries about going into the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles with a kicker he had never seen in person. LaFleur called the situation “uncharted territory” and admitted that having an untested kicker could impact in-game decisions. However, after witnessing Narveson’s performance in his first two kicking sessions, LaFleur’s confidence in the new kicker started to grow.

During his first practice with the Packers, Narveson impressed by making all five of his kicks, including a challenging 58-yarder in windy conditions. Subsequently, in another practice session, he went 5-for-6, with the lone miss on a 51-yard attempt, which he quickly followed up with a successful 53-yarder. Feeling the pressure, Narveson acknowledged the importance of making a strong first impression and being prepared for the opportunity he was given.

Narveson was claimed off waivers from the Tennessee Titans, becoming the sixth kicker on the Packers’ roster since the previous season. He was brought in as a replacement for Anders Carlson, who had struggled towards the end of his rookie season. Despite Narveson’s success in the preseason with the Titans, they opted for a veteran kicker, Nick Folk, leaving the door open for the Packers to acquire Narveson. His journey to Green Bay was unexpected, as he had anticipated re-signing with the Titans’ practice squad.

While the Packers had studied Narveson during the draft process, they did not offer him a contract after he went undrafted. The Titans were his only option at the time, but his consistent performance during the preseason games caught the attention of the Packers’ management. Narveson’s ability to execute under pressure and deliver in crucial moments ultimately led to his opportunity with the Packers. His perseverance and readiness to seize the moment have earned him a spot on the team’s roster.

Looking Ahead

As Brayden Narveson prepares for his debut with the Green Bay Packers in their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, his journey from an undrafted rookie to a starting kicker is a testament to his determination and skill. While there were initial doubts surrounding his abilities, Narveson’s consistent performance and resilience have proven his worth to the team. The Packers’ decision to place their trust in a new and untested kicker may just pay off as they head into the new season with Brayden Narveson leading their special teams unit.
